I recently attended the Indian dance and theatre workshop under Janani. The way she broke down the complex dance movements and made them clear and simple still capturing the core was really so exciting for me. One of the highlights for me was the creative ice-breaking session at the beginning. She incorporated dance movements into an icebreaker which helped everyone feel comfortable and engaged right from the beginning. Would definitely be looking forward for future workshops.

Thanks for one of the best workshops I attended so far. Learning classical dance has always been a dream and to get a flavor of it was truly a wonderful experience. Despite never been trained classically, the workshop design made me fully indulge and learn something new. I look forward to attending more such workshops in the future. Thank you!

The workshop conducted on Bharatanatyam gave me an enriching experience on nuances about this dance form. Our teacher Janani Ram taught us the meaning and emotions of portraying our names in the form of dance and depiction. We learnt expressions, hand gestures, toes steps, thal, thala and rhythm all along in this 2 hours. It was synchronisation of emotions, music and dance with a story telling. At the end of the workshop we learnt to imbibe and create the dance steps and perform our dance tribute to our Motherland India on our national song – Vande Mataram. Our teacher has so much grace, poise and patience that was visible throughout in the conduct. Her humble roots and gracious smile was blended so beautifully in the dance performed. I look forward to this richness of values and dance form to learn in future. Good luck always

Next workshop coming soon

Have you ever looked at a classical dance performance and wished you could try it? Then, this workshop is for you.

Classical dance forms like Bharatanāṭyam are not celebrated enough among the general audience. Although you need years of practice and commitment to master it, you don’t really need much to understand and feel the beauty of it. Through this workshop, I intend to bring to you some exploration, learning, and fun through elements of dance, music, mime, and emotion. In this workshop, you will:

  • Learn dance movements and gestures (adapted from Bharatanāṭyam)
  • Explore the emotive language (Bhāvas)
  • Attempt the Indian rhythmic mnemonics (Sollukaṭṭus or Bhols)
  • Discover the beauty of story-telling and role-play through an Indian mythological story.
